As pressures of anthropogenic activities on the environment have escalated over the past century, the need of holistic remedies of current and emerging issues as well as systematic environmental management for the future has increased dramatically. Environmental sustainability has surged in its importance in the agenda of many governments in the world. The Green plan 2030 released in early 2021 by several government agencies in Singapore demonstrates well the importance of environment and sustainability. Water and energy shortage, circular economy and alternative resources, climate change, carbon emission and reduction are currently the environmental challenges faced by humans globally. How to tackle these environmental challenges in order to facilitate sustainable development and fulfil the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations is what is needed critically today.

The research cluster on Environmental Sustainability at CEE, NUS consists of leading researchers with a wide range of expertise and rich R&D experiences in many areas, including alternative energy and resources, water science and technologies, environmental pollution and emission control, advanced biotechnology for environmental applications, water, food and energy nexus, mitigation of urban air quality, etc. Our cluster develops innovative solutions, effective strategies, exciting knowhow and useful technologies through in-depth research, aiming to address the local, regional and global needs in sustainable living.
