With unparalleled views of the meandering Aare River and Bern’s historic Old Town, Rose Garden or Rosengarten is a dreamy escape in the city. From a historical point of view, this garden was a cemetery between the late 18th and 19th century and was morphed into a park in 1913. In fact, this is where the celebrated artist Paul Klee was laid to rest. Apart from being the abode of legends, this park is so magnificent that on a clear sunny day, it lets you feast your eyes on panoramic views of the Bernese Oberland region and the Alps. A few minutes from the Bear Pits, this garden has over a hundred varieties of roses, rhododendrons, water lilies and irises in a plethora of colours. These fragrant beauties make for excellent photo ops. A delicious rosy aroma perpetually wafts through the air, casting a spell on the visitors.
For all of the bookworms, there is a dedicated ‘reading garden’ inside the Rosengarten and the presence of a fancy restaurant only adds to its popularity. A warm cup of coffee with a heart-warming view is waiting for you inside this welcoming establishment. Bus number 10 from the main train station will bring you to the ‘Rosengarten’ bus stop.
