How do I remove icons from the system tray? (without closing app)

I am using windows 10.

In the settings, you can remove ''system icons'' from the tray (turn system icons on or off but not other apps), or you can move your apps across from the taskbar to the system tray and back (select which icons appear on the taskbar).

What I am trying to do is remove apps entirely from the system tray whether the app is running or not.

My reason for wanting to do this is to keep it tidy and easy to find for those few background apps I do use, rather than having tons of system tray apps.

There are a few apps that give this service within their own programming but many do not also. Is there any software/apps that can help me do this? or any way to do this really would help, thanks.

Yeh like I said in my original post all that option does is push the icon to the task bar and back to the system tray. I want them to be gone from both completely, just hidden to avoid clutter when so many apps open. I see absolutely no reason to have an app there that is open on my desktop (where I can use all its functionality).

I understand the use of the tray for background apps hence me wanting to access those easier without the dumb tray filled.

There has to be a 3rd party application to do this somewhere, at least I am hoping. win7 used to offer this as standard functionality afaik.

I have never found a third-party utility to control these icons. There might be some [limited] relevant capability in TweakUI for all I know.

Windows 7 was exactly the same as Windows 10 in this respect.

Winaero has a thread showing you how to edit regedit to close the whole systray: How to Hide Notification Area in Windows 10 (System Tray) but unsure if it is in the app itself. Regardless thank you for the suggestion, was a good start.

Couldn't get this program to work but winaero had the full close feature.


I have actually found something that does what I want called ''Taskbar Hide'' located here: Eusing Software - Taskbar Hide - hide windows program: hide applications,hide window,hide programs,auto max window

I have to put the apps into the taskbar for the program to see them but then it can hide them from there so not showing in either taskbar or systray.
