Russia shot down its own Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet flying over Crimea, Ukraine claimed on Saturday. The incident was first reported by a Moscow-appointed leader in Sevastopol - Mikhail Razvozhayev - who said that a Russian warplane 'crashed' off at the annexed region. The Crimean Wind Telegram channel reported that Russia 'accidentally' shot down the jet after it had departed from the Belbek military airfield.
Several videos on social media showed a Russian Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet going down. Moscow is yet to confirm if it shot down its own warplane.
Razvozhayev further said that the pilot had ejected safely and was rescued. Videos showed a warplane ablaze during its descent. A pilot's parachute could also be seen, a Newsweek report on Saturday read.
The Crimean Wind Telegram channel added that the aircraft was shot down after it left the Belbek military airfield. This is not the first time Kyiv has claimed that Russia shot down its own jet. Reports of Su-34 fighter bombers and Su-35 fighter jets have surfaced over the past two months.
Meanwhile, Russian missile and drone attacks damaged Ukraine's thermal and hydro power plans, electricity grid operator Ukrenergo said on Friday. An emergency shutdown was called in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Governor Serhii Lysak said “critical infrastructure” was bombed and a man taken to hospital.
Explosions were heard in the area. The Ukrainian air force had earlier warned of a missile threat throughout the country. Russia has not claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
