‘Arrow’s Kelly Hu To Star In ‘Becoming Ginger Rogers; Courtney Gains Toplines Indie Thriller ‘Candy Corn’
Kelly Hu (Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, The Scorpion King) is set to star in Becoming Ginger Rogers, an indie film, which is being directed by Anna Chi (Blindness, Lost Summer, The Boxcar Children: Surprise Island). The romantic comedy is based on the memoir Becoming Ginger Rogers: How Ballroom Dancing Made Me a Happier Woman, Better Partner, and Smarter CEO by New York publicist Patrice Tanaka. In the wake of 9/11 and faced with a personal crisis involving her beloved Afghani husband, the Hawaiian-born Tanaka turned to ballroom dancing as an escape. Against all odds she became a sensation on the competitive circuit, rediscovering her true self in the process. Beverly Kopf and Gary Goldstein optioned the novel and will pen the screenplay. Hu, who recently was seen in The Orville on Fox, is repped by Buchwald and Mainstay Entertainment. Chi is repped by Summit Talent & Literary Agency.
Courtney Gains, who is perhaps best known for his roles in films like Children of the Corn and The Burbs, produced and stars in Candy Corn, a suspense thriller written and directed by In Hell Everybody Loves Popcorn helmer Josh Hasty. PJ Soles (Halloween, Carrie), Tony Todd (Candyman, Final Destination), and newcomer Pancho Moler (American Horror Story) also star in the film along with Sky Elobar, Caleb Thomas, Madison Russ, Cy Creamer, Jimothy Beckholt, Nate Chaney, Patrick Ryan, Justin Mabry, Matt O’Neill, and Jaime Gallagher. The pic is set on eve of Halloween in Grove Hill, Ohio where a traveling carnival is in town for the weekend. Local outcast Jacob Atkins has been hired as one of the freaks in the event’s main attraction, “Dr.Death’s Side Show Spook House Spectacular.” Meanwhile, a group of local bullies are planning their annual public hazing of Jacob, but this year things go too far. Matt O’Neill also produced the film, while Tony Todd, James Claeys of Local Boogeyman Productions, Justin Mabry of Trick or Treat Studios), Lindsey Kowalski, Ben Scrivens of Fright Rags, Johnny Cooper, Nick Ford, and Brandon Cooper served as exec producers. Local Boogeyman Productions financed the project.
