I’ve always been under the impression I’m not a fan of biopics, then someone like Gus Van Sant comes and proves me wrong. This is easily up there with Zodiac as one of the great San Fransisco movies of the last twenty years, and as much as the vertical roads and vibrant culture of that once magical city grab my attention, it’s the man at the core of it all that gets at my heart. Sean Penn is absolutely sensational in this, embodying Milk in both mannerisms and mind. Although I‘ve always been aware of him as a historical figure, I was largely unfamiliar with the details, making this enlightening in a genuinely emotional way for me.

Gus Van Sant is a filmmaker with a unique vision and style. His films are usually very subtly done, but their subtlety makes them shine. Quiet but powerful. Sometimes slow, never sluggish. But above all, the cinematography is always top-notch.
Many of these elements make up the technical aspect of the film and contribute to its appeal in many ways. The film is, however, most notable for Sean Penn's outstanding and Oscar winning performance as Harvey Milk. While there are moments when the actor is allowed to deliver some of those typically Oscar-worthy dramatic moments, he shines through a quiet, very subdued performance that is nevertheless very magnetic and captivating to a degree.
