Filmmaker to present documentary about Spanish artists and intellectuals

Javier Espada, director of the Spanish Film Institute, will screen his film “Generación Buñuel, Lorca, Dalí” and take part in a Q&A at on Friday, Nov. 15. The event will take place at 5 p.m. in Rm. 208 of the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. The screening and Q&A are co-sponsored by the 2019 Latin American and Iberian Film Festival at Yale and the Poynter Fellowship in Journalism.

Espada is the designer and head of the Buñuel de Calanda Center, a museum dedicated to Aragonese filmmaker Luis Buñuel. He is also the creator and director of the International Film Festival. Additionally, he has participated in the Zaragoza Ecozine Festival since its founding in 2007 with the intention of exploring climate change and environmental issues through cinema. He has directed and produced several films, including “Trans Nazarin: Following Nazarin” and “Una mujer sin sombra.”

“Generación Buñuel, Lorca, Dalí” focuses on the lives and friendships of Spanish intellectuals and artists Buñuel, Salvador Dalí, and Federico García Lorca. The film centers around the influence of the Spanish Civil War on the friend group. It draws on the work of writer Max Aub, whose unfinished project on Buñuel resulted in the production of thousands of interviews with the filmmaker and those in his life. “Generación Buñuel, Lorca, Dalí” recovers these conversations and combines them with archival material to highlight the legacies of Buñuel, Lorca, and Dalí.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus distinguished reporters, editors and others who have made important contributions to the media. Among recent Poynter fellows are Penny Lane, Michael Shnayerson, and Eve Ensler.
