Barbie is on track to be the film of the summer, if not the entire year, and we haven't even seen it yet. This movie is already giving us everything we never knew we needed in our life until now, from a Dua Lipa Barbie anthem to John Cena as a merman to Issa Rae as president. Truly, the star power of this film is undeniable and we're already obsessed.

Along with the impeccable Barbiecore outfits we've been served on the movie's press tour and the now viral teasers featuring arched feet that seemingly defy the laws of physics, it feels as though we've been in the grips of Barbie mania for quite some time now. And we're totally fine with that.

On July 21, we'll all finally be able to judge for ourselves whether life in plastic really is fantastic when Barbie hits cinemas. Though given that it features pink everything, countless famous faces, witty quips, and early Oscar buzz, we're pretty confident it will be.

But, as with all good things, we're already finding ourselves wondering whether we'll be getting a second hit of pink dopamine in the form of Barbie 2. While there have been rumblings on the internet, we're here to set the record straight on how likely a Barbie sequel is—including everything Barbie herself has said on the matter.

So can we expect another Greta Gerwig–directed Barbie World extravaganza in the future? Jump in, Barbie, here's everything we know so far.

Will there be a Barbie 2?

While nothing has been confirmed yet, there have reportedly been conversations around a potential Barbie sequel. In a recent interview with Time, Margot Robbie said, “It could go a million different directions from this point, but I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”

Sounds tentatively positive…. What's more, according to Time, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz is apparently very enthusiastic about the potential for “more Barbie movies.”

Back in November 2022, Gerwig also told Variety that it would be “exciting” to see more Barbie movies in the future. When asked whether the film was the beginning of a planned multifilm franchise, she responded, “I can’t answer all these questions!” with a laugh, before adding, “I mean, it would certainly be exciting if it was.”

Iiiinteresting. Given the hype that this film has seen already, we remain hopeful. But even if a sequel were to happen, expect a wait: Any plans would likely be put on hold until after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are resolved.

What would Barbie 2 be about?

As stated above, Margot Robbie has explained that the story could go in “a million” different directions. What we do know about the first film is that it sees its title character venture out of Barbie Land for the first time ever as she's forced to reckon with challenges of the real world.

We'll have to wait and see for ourselves where Barbie ends up at the conclusion of the first film, but rumors are circulating on the internet that a spin-off centered on Ken's character might make sense.

Equally, a potential Barbie 2 could easily follow a similar structure to the first film and see her dropped in an entirely new universe. At this stage, everything's pure speculation, but we can hope.

Though nothing is confirmed, when asked what a sequel would look like in an interview with ET, Ryan Gosling responded, “I don't know; you'd have to ask Greta that. I would work with Greta and Margot on anything.”

Music to our ears. In the meantime, enjoy reveling in the trailer for the first film below.
