Otto Dix
When Otto Dix was removed from his post as professor at Dresden Academy in April 1933, one of the most remarkable artistic careers in the first third of the century in Germany came to an abrupt end for the time being. Dix consequently left Dresden to take refuge on the remote shores of Lake Constance. There, in natural surroundings in which he saw himself as "exiled", the artist sought solace in landscape painting - after he had previously delivered an artistic commentary on what he saw in the big city: the victims of society, the repudiated beggars, the cannon fodder on both sides of the trenches, the cripples, the whores and also those who profited from the misery. He showed all this without any glossing over by convention, but also without unmasking, attacking or ridiculing; without bias, political avowals or liberal posing. Throughout his artistic life, Otto Dix always broke off lines of development in order to start afresh. This book traces this process with stimulating texts on his eventful path as an artist and on his portrait and landscape painting. Around 100 color illustrations of paintings, cartoons, watercolors and graphic series offer a comprehensive view of the artist's oeuvre. The artist: Otto Dix (Gera 1891-1969 Singen). 1905-1908 apprenticeship as a painter and decorator. 1909-1913 studied at the Royal School for Arts and Crafts, Dresden. Soldier in First World War. 1919-1922 studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. 1923-1925 studied at Dusseldorf Academy. In 1933 Dix was dismissed from his post at Dresden Academy, he was labelled 'degenerate' and banned from exhibiting his work.
