Tina Modotti by Edward Weston - a picture from the past

Tina Modotti was born in Udine, Italy, on 17 August 1896. She emigrated to the USA in 1913 to join her father, who, like many working class Italians, had settled there. After moving to Los Angeles in 1918, she met photographer Edward Weston, became his favourite model and, eventually, his lover. They moved to Mexico City in 1923 where he taught her photography. Modotti's early photographs were close-up still-lifes but, by 1927, having joined the Communist Party, her images started to include the more social and political content for which she is acclaimed
